Each year, more than 10 million students graduate from Chinese universities into a labour market that has struggled to generate enough white-collar jobs. As recruitment in property, technology and finance slows, many young people are being forced to look beyond conventional career tracks. One unlikely outlet has been the rapid rise of China’s “micro drama” industry.
What began as a fringe form of short-form online entertainment has evolved into a significant source of employment. A recent report by Peking University’s National School of Development estimates that the sector directly supported around 690,000 jobs in 2025, mostly held by young workers. When related upstream and downstream roles are included, total employment linked to micro dramas exceeds 2 million.
The appeal lies in the industry’s low entry threshold and fast turnaround. Micro dramas typically run for only a few minutes per episode and rely on rapid plot twists designed to hold viewers’ attention on mobile platforms. Production cycles last 5 to 10 days, allowing teams to move quickly from one project to the next. For graduates facing prolonged job searches or short-term contracts, this model offers a steadier income stream than many traditional creative fields.
The industry’s structure has also matured. Early productions were often shot by teams of about a dozen people working on minimal budgets. Today, crews commonly range from 60 to 90 members, covering directing, cinematography, lighting, costume design, props and on-site management. According to state media, national output has stabilised at around 3,000 micro dramas per month, suggesting a standardised, repeatable production system.
For some young producers, the sector has become a substitute for salaried employment. One producer wrote on social media last year that she was earning up to 15,000 yuan a month and had invested 70,000 yuan of her own savings into producing a micro drama, employing several friends in the process. Such cases highlight how self-funded projects are increasingly being used as a hedge against unemployment.
The market growth has been rapid. Industry estimates show that micro dramas generated 50.5 billion yuan in revenue in 2024, surpassing China’s annual box office takings. The audience reached more than 660 million people nationwide, and projections suggest the market could expand to 85.6 billion yuan by 2027. This scale has drawn capital and labour at a time when other cultural industries are shrinking.
The spillover effects are visible beyond employment figures. Across the country, vacant shopping malls, offices and industrial buildings have been converted into filming locations. In Xinzheng, Henan province, a largely empty mall was transformed into a production base that hosted hundreds of micro dramas within a year, with multiple crews operating daily. Similar short-term rentals have emerged elsewhere, offering property owners an alternative use for underutilised assets.
The boom, however, also underlines deeper problems in China’s labour market. As an independent film producer, notes, traditional film and television industries can no longer absorb the volume of young talent emerging from universities. Micro dramas have filled part of that gap, not because they offer prestige or long-term security, but because they are accessible and immediately monetisable.
