Since 1950, Tibet has endured Beijing’s heavy hand, but under Xi Jinping the repression has metastasized into something far more sinister. Xi has not merely continued the policies of his predecessors—he has elevated them into a comprehensive system of tyranny, stripping Tibetans of their culture, faith, and dignity.
Total Surveillance State. Xi has transformed Tibet into one of the most monitored societies on earth. DNA collection, facial recognition, and AI‑driven tracking systems blanket the plateau. Every monastery, school, and village is wired into Beijing’s panopticon. Tibetans live under constant suspicion, their private lives criminalized by the state.
-Assimilation by Force. The Sinicization campaign has reached unprecedented levels. Tibetan children are separated from families and placed in boarding schools where Mandarin replaces Tibetan, and loyalty to the Communist Party replaces devotion to their heritage. Religious practice is gutted: images of the Dalai Lama banned, monks detained, monasteries shuttered. Xi’s message is clear—Tibet’s identity must be erased.
Legal Warfare. Xi has weaponized law to crush dissent. The Ethnic Unity Law criminalizes even the celebration of Tibetan culture abroad, extending Beijing’s reach into diaspora communities. Tibetans who speak out overseas risk retaliation against their families back home. This is tyranny without borders.
Centralization of Power. Unlike his predecessors, Xi has concentrated authority to a degree unseen since Mao. Tibet policy is not bureaucratic inertia—it is Xi’s personal vision. His father once sought dialogue with the Dalai Lama; Xi has chosen ruthless repression. He has made Tibet the crucible of his authoritarian model, a proving ground for techniques later exported to Xinjiang and beyond.
Why Xi Is the Worst Tyrant. He has fused technology with repression, creating a digital dictatorship. He has criminalized culture itself, making Tibetan identity a punishable offense. He has extended tyranny beyond China’s borders, targeting Tibetans worldwide. He has ensured Tibet’s suffering is not incidental but deliberate, systematic, and permanent.
Consequences for Tibet and the World. Tibet faces cultural extinction. Its language, religion, and traditions are being dismantled piece by piece. For the world, Xi’s Tibet is a warning: authoritarianism perfected in Tibet will not remain confined there. It is a template for global repression, a model of how tyranny can be modernized and exported.
