As China’s economy deteriorates and citizens find themselves with dwindling financial resources, the trend of leftover mystery boxes has surged in popularity among the youth. Originating in Denmark with the app “Too Good to Go,” this anti-food waste movement has gained traction in Western countries. The concept involves packaging unsold food nearing its expiration date, rather than scraps left on diners’ plates, to reduce waste and save customers money. This trend is now rapidly spreading in China, highlighting the dire economic situation and the lengths to which people are going to make ends meet. China’s economic policies have left many struggling, and the rise of leftover mystery boxes is a stark indicator of the country’s worsening financial crisis.

Recently, a community cafeteria in Shanghai introduced “leftover mystery boxes” for a mere 10 Yuan (about $1.40). These boxes contain a random assortment of dishes such as garlic sprouts, potatoes, and curry chicken cubes. Despite being past its mealtime rush, the cafeteria was bustling with activity. This initiative packages unsold dishes freshly prepared that day, which would otherwise be discarded. At 10 Yuan, these boxes offer exceptional value with dishes typically costing much more. The program has effectively reduced food waste, minimized kitchen garbage, and received widespread praise. However, supplies are limited, and latecomers often miss out. Many customers appreciate the affordability; leftovers from lunch can be reheated for dinner, making it a practical choice. While the original intent was to curb waste, the program has unexpectedly become popular.

Yet, this trend highlights the deepening economic crisis in China. China’s policies have driven citizens to scramble for affordable meals, reflecting the government’s failure to address the root causes of economic decline. Instead of providing sustainable solutions, Beijing’s actions have led to rising living costs and declining consumer purchasing power. The popularity of these mystery boxes underscores the severity of the situation, as people resort to buying leftovers just to survive. This paints a grim picture of China’s economic landscape and raises serious questions about the efficacy of its policies.

In Shenzhen, dining at a seafood buffet typically starts at a minimum of 200 Yuan (around $27). However, several five-star hotels in Longhua offers leftover mystery box buffet vouchers for just 79 Yuan. Patrons enjoy dishes from a buffet that usually costs over 200 Yuan. Recently, several star-rated hotels in various cities have started offering affordable breakfast buffets to non-guests, including weekly and monthly memberships, with some priced as low as 9.9 Yuan per visit. This economically driven trend reflects the challenges of declining consumer spending and the creative strategies businesses are adopting to adapt to the times. Successful hotels are now expanding the concept to other dining periods, offering dinner and late-night mystery box buffet vouchers, typically priced at one-third or one-fourth of the original price, and sometimes as low as 15.9 Yuan.
The surge in leftover meal boxes underscores the severe challenges facing China’s food service industry amid worsening economic conditions. Rapid adoption indicates declining consumer purchasing power, with many restaurants teetering on the brink of closure. Restaurateurs often resort to phrases like “open fewer stores,” “close unprofitable locations,” and “increase survival rates” to describe their strategies in this tough market. One restaurant owner lamented, “The wave of closures is upon us. On a Friday night, can you imagine not having a single dining customer? I barely managed a dozen delivery orders, and the revenue didn’t even cover the rent.” This dire situation reflects the deeper systemic issues in China’s economic policies.

In China, secondhand restaurant equipment dealers, often referred to as the “undertakers” of the industry, provide a stark glimpse into market health. Restaurant closures in the first 10 months of 2024 were 2.7 times higher than the same period in 2023. In May 2023, Shanghai boasted 2,700 restaurants with average per capita spending over 500 Yuan ($68). By July 2024, fewer than half remained. Even high-end establishments, once icons of fine dining, have shuttered en masse, including Ming Lu Sichuan and Sushi Art Bun 27, known for their extravagant dining experiences.

In the first half of 2024, a staggering 1.05 million restaurants across China shuttered, nearly matching the total closures for the previous year. With the Lunar New Year approaching, not a single customer was in sight. A staff member sighed, “Several nearby restaurants have already shut down. The situation is dire. It feels like the market has taken a sudden nosedive and we have no idea how to survive.”

The swift adoption of leftover mystery boxes, initially a commendable effort to curb waste, now highlights China’s severe economic struggles. The surge in restaurant closures and the beleaguered food service sector paint a bleak picture of the current economic climate. As consumer spending plummets and businesses scramble to adapt, China’s food industry grapples with the harsh realities of a deteriorating economy.
