China’s Hollow Claim of Being the “World’s Safest Country”

When the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) proclaims that China is the “world’s safest country,” it is not merely a boast it is a calculated deception. During the recent Two Sessions, the Supreme People’s Procuratorate and the Supreme People’s Court presented judicial reports that painted a picture of declining crime rates and rising public safety. Yet, beneath the glossy veneer of official statistics lies a reality that is far darker, more sinister, and profoundly hypocritical. Ordinary citizens know this truth all too well: safety in China is not a universal right, but a privilege reserved for those shielded by the CCP’s power structure.

The CCP’s narrative hinges on numbers that claim arrests and prosecutions have dropped by double‑digit percentages year‑on‑year. On paper, violent crimes are down, and courts are supposedly concluding fewer serious cases. But these figures are meaningless without independent oversight. A former mainland lawyer, now in the United States, has pointed out, many incidents are deliberately excluded from official records. Disappearances, assaults, and wrongful convictions vanish into bureaucratic silence, never surfacing in the statistics that the CCP flaunts before the world. In effect, the government manufactures “safety” by erasing evidence of danger.

This manipulation of perception is not new. For years, the Ministry of Public Security has declared China one of the safest countries globally, a claim mocked by netizens as shameless propaganda. The irony is glaring: China is also the country where people can vanish without explanation, where organ harvesting scandals have been documented, and where wrongful convictions are rampant. To call such a nation “safe” is to weaponize language against reality.

Consider the daily lives of parents across China. At primary and secondary schools, gates are crowded with anxious mothers and fathers waiting to escort their children. Why? Because the risk of abduction or disappearance is real, and no parent dares to leave their child unattended. In countries that genuinely enjoy public safety, such scenes are rare. In China, they are routine. This alone exposes the hollowness of the CCP’s claim. If parents cannot trust that their children will be safe walking home from school, how can the nation be called the safest in the world?

The hypocrisy extends to the built environment. Residential buildings across China are fitted with anti‑theft grills, a physical manifestation of fear. Citizens fortify their homes not because they believe in the CCP’s assurances, but because they know the risks are real. The government’s statistics may show declining theft, but the lived reality of millions tells a different story. Safety is not measured by numbers in a report; it is measured by the confidence of people in their daily lives. And in China, that confidence is absent.

Even more disturbing are the allegations of organ theft and forced harvesting. Reports have long suggested that healthy citizens, particularly prisoners of conscience, are targeted so that their organs can be transplanted into the bodies of powerful individuals. If true, this practice represents not only a grotesque violation of human rights but also a chilling redefinition of “safety.” In the CCP’s twisted logic, safety means ensuring the survival of the elite, even at the expense of ordinary lives. The body of the powerless becomes a resource for the powerful, a system that mocks the very concept of justice.

The CCP’s judicial report also ignores the epidemic of wrongful convictions. In a system where courts are instruments of political control, innocence offers no protection. Citizens without connections to the Party can find themselves trapped in “ironclad” cases designed to withstand scrutiny, regardless of truth. Safety, in this context, is not about freedom from harm but about submission to authority. Those who question the narrative are silenced, their voices erased just as crime statistics are manipulated.

Netizens have been quick to highlight the contradictions. On platform X, one pointedly asked: “Is there any parent in mainland China who dares not to pick up their child from school?” The answer is obvious, and it cuts to the heart of the CCP’s hypocrisy. Safety cannot be proclaimed; it must be lived. And in China, it is not lived. Instead, fear permeates every corner of society fear of crime, fear of disappearance, fear of the state itself.

The CCP’s self‑praise is indeed “top tier,” but it is also dangerous. By declaring China the safest country, the regime seeks to normalize silence, to dismiss the suffering of victims, and to delegitimize criticism. It is a strategy of control, not of protection. The Two Sessions, far from being a celebration of progress, have become a theatre of hypocrisy, where the safety of the people is sacrificed to the vanity of the Party.

Ultimately, the question is not whether China is safe. The question is: safe for whom? For the CCP elite, shielded by power and privilege, the answer may be yes. For ordinary citizens, the answer is a resounding no. Safety in China is conditional, contingent, and corrupt. It is a mirage conjured by statistics, a narrative enforced by censorship, and a promise betrayed by reality.

The world must not be deceived by the CCP’s proclamations. True safety is built on transparency, accountability, and respect for human rights. Until China embraces these principles, its claim to be the “world’s safest country” will remain what it has always been: a lie.
